Cloud computing is basically computing based on the internet. Where in the past, people would run applications or programs from software downloaded on a physical computer or server in their building, cloud computing allows users to access the same kinds of applications through the internet.
It is a solution growing in popularity, especially amongst SMEs. Cloud computing involves a third party – typically a service provider and a large data centre, to host the organisation’s email, databases and other mission-critical systems, which are then accessed via a secure internet connection. This can deliver major cost savings. The trade-off is that the organisation will sacrifice some control.
